Instructional Procedures
Choose one of the following “attention getters” for your class.
Option 1 – Law Enforcement Guest Speaker
- Have students open the KW-no-L & Points to Ponder Worksheet. They’ll complete the first section (KW-no-L) before the guest speaker begins to record what they already know and what they want to know about the topic or presenter.
- Prior to the lesson, have students submit questions for the guest speaker. Prescreen questions for appropriateness.
- Use the Guest Speaker Guide to facilitate the presentation. Students can refer to it and fill in the “Points to Ponder” section of their slides as they listen to the speaker’s responses.
- Conduct a review or discussion using the prompts in the Guest Speaker Guide to debrief the presentation:
- What did students learn about the job?
- What surprised them about the job?
- What concerned them about the job?
- What do they want to learn more about now?
- What can the community do to make the job easier or have a positive impact?
- Introduce the Situation and guide students to understand the driving question (or develop a similar one).
- Have students complete the Law Enforcement Careers KWL Chart by filling in the “L” section and the reflection at the bottom to summarize what they learned about this career.
Option 2 – Safety Concern Brainstorm
- Introduce the Situation to frame the activity.
- Have students brainstorm safety concerns they’ve heard about, noticed in their community, or personally worry about. Teachers may use any brainstorming method or the Brainstorming Resources.
