Milestone 1 (Day 1): Entry Event

Situation

Local venture capitalists are interested in increasing student awareness of entrepreneurial opportunities and have agreed to sponsor sustainable student companies. Students will identify a school, community, or world need to which a portion of the funds will be donated. The venture capitalists have proposed to match the funds of the companies which hold the most promise.

Students will choose their own product or service to base their business on. The business plan will include a prototype, marketing plans, and a cost analysis. Students will present their business plans to guest “Sharks.”

Instructional Procedures

  1. Briefly guide the class through the What Is an Entrepreneur? Slides.
  2. Explain to the class that local venture capitalists are interested in increasing student awareness of entrepreneurial opportunities and have agreed to sponsor sustainable student companies. They will identify a school, community, or world need in which a portion of the funds will be donated. The venture capitalists have proposed to match the funds of the companies which hold the most promise.
  3. Explain to the students that they will choose their own product or service to base their business on. The business plan will include a prototype, marketing plans, and a cost analysis. Students will present their business plans to the guest “Sharks.” They will also identify a school, community, or world need for which a portion of the funds will be donated.
  4. Guide students to construct a question similar to, “How can we design a business plan using an online platform to earn money for a school in need?” (Or other needs they can identify with.)
  5. Use the following questions to lead a discussion:
    • What do you buy online?
    • What websites do you buy from?
    • Why do you buy online?
  6. As a homework assignment, have the students individually brainstorm and research multiple possible businesses they could develop given their current skill set and interests. Refer students to view the kidpreneur resources.
  7. If time allows, showcase entrepreneurs via the Pathful Connect Video Library and highlight examples from local businesses or people with online platforms. If possible, you could also invite an entrepreneur to speak with the class.
