Situation
The local school district is experiencing a teacher shortage. Large numbers of teachers are leaving the profession and they are not receiving enough qualified applicants to fill vacant positions. The district is looking for ideas about how they can retain effective teachers.

Instructional Procedures
- Have students list five to ten teacher descriptors (e.g., patience, long hours, helps students) on a 3×5 card.
- Use the Portrait of a First-Year Teacher to discuss essential characteristics of professionally licensed educators.
- Run a Think-Pair-Share where students recall influential teachers in their lives.
- Discuss the nationwide need for high-quality teachers.
- Share with the students that the local school district is experiencing a teacher shortage. Large numbers of teachers are leaving the profession and they are not receiving enough qualified applicants to fill vacant positions. The district is looking for ideas about how they can retain effective teachers. If possible, share news reports or articles about teacher shortages in your community.
- Lead a discussion about teacher retention. Use the following questions to guide the discussion.
- What are some reasons teachers might quit?
- How are students affected by high teacher turnover?
- How are communities affected by high teacher turnover?
- Why do some teachers stay and remain successful?
- Guide students to construct a driving question such as: “How can we solve the problem of retaining effective teachers?”
- Explain the project: research the teaching career, develop a solution to retain effective teachers, and create a presentation for administrators and/or school board members.
- Have students choose a teaching position from pre-K to 12th grade to research. Divide the class into groups based on their choices.
- Instruct the groups to complete the Teacher Team Chart with their team names and selected teacher type.
