Milestone 1 (Day 1): Entry Event

Situation

Thousands of dollars are spent every year promoting Utah as a vacation destination. The majority of that money is spent in advertising in other states and countries around the world. Tourists come to Utah and spend millions of dollars while visiting our great state. Meanwhile, other states and countries lure our Utah citizens to destinations around the world, and we spend our money there.

So, what if we were to get people who live in Utah to STAY in Utah for their vacation? We have so much to see and do! Utah residents spend millions of dollars on vacations every year. The Utah Travel Council has decided to launch an advertising campaign to try to convince Utah residents to stay in Utah for their vacations, therefore keeping those tourist dollars in the Utah economy. Students will create an advertising campaign to encourage Utah residents to stay in Utah for their vacations.

Key Student Questions

  • What is a staycation?
  • What are some reasons people choose to take a staycation?
  • What are some vacation spots in Utah?

Materials

Instructional Procedures

  1. Ask the students, “What is a staycation?”
  2. Provide each student with a copy of the What is a Staycation? Article. Ask them to read silently and use the highlighters to mark reasons people would choose to take a staycation.
  3. After everyone has finished reading, ask: “What are some reasons people would choose to take a staycation rather than leave town for a vacation?” Make a list of reasons on the board.
  4. Explain that thousands of dollars are spent each year promoting Utah as a vacation destination—mostly advertising to other states and countries. Tourists come to Utah and spend millions here, while our residents also spend tourism dollars elsewhere. What if we could get Utah residents to stay in Utah for their vacations? The Utah Travel Council is launching an advertising campaign to encourage residents to stay in-state and keep those dollars in the Utah economy.
  5. Guide students to construct a question similar to, “How can we encourage Utah residents to stay in Utah and spend their tourist dollars here instead of elsewhere?”
  6. Have the students brainstorm a variety of vacation spots in Utah. Vacation spots can be anything from a national park to a ski resort to a favorite restaurant. Encourage them to think of places they like to go with their family. Create a class list of ideas.
  7. Explain to the students that they will be working independently or in pairs (teacher’s choice) to create an advertising campaign to encourage Utah residents to stay in Utah for their vacations. Their advertising campaign will consist of three different types of advertisements.
  8. Using the STAYcations Product Checklist and Rubric as a guide, provide an overview of the project.
