Milestone 1 (Day 1): Entry Event

Situation

Recent events have shown how important it is to become more independent in our own food production. One obstacle for people is finding time or remembering to water on a regular basis. With technology becoming more affordable, both large greenhouse operations and small window-sill herb gardeners are creating smart gardens.

Key Student Questions

  • What would be the benefit of having a smart garden?

Formative Assessments

  • Class Discussion

Instructional Procedures

  1. Show the Meet FarmBot Video and/or the FarmBot Stories — The Sudweeks Family Video.
  2. Ask, “What would be the benefit of having a ‘smart’ garden?”
  3. Discuss how recent events have shown the importance of becoming more independent in our own food production. Not everyone can leave the grid completely, but we can all become a little less dependent on grocery stores. One obstacle is finding time or remembering to water regularly. With technology becoming more affordable and accessible—from businesses with multiple large greenhouses to small window-sill herb gardens—people are creating smart gardens.
  4. Explain that students will grow a small window herb garden and design/build a “smart” sensor and pump to automate watering.
  5. Guide students to construct a question similar to, “How can we automate the watering of a small herb garden?”
  6. View the 10 Herbs to Grow in Your Small Garden Video.
  7. Invite a horticulturist as a guest speaker to share expertise about herbs (visit theUtah State University Extension Website or Pathful Connect to connect with an expert).
  8. Organize students into small groups and have them identify the herbs they would like to grow in their window herb garden.
